Goal! The Dream Begins (2005)

With the full backing of FIFA, Goal! shares the story of an illegal immigrant, Santiago, who lives in Los Angeles, and dreams of playing professional soccer. Noticed by a former professional player, Santiago saves his money for an opportunity to attend a tryout in England. Santiago’s father steals the savings, putting his dream on hold until his grandmother sells some personal possessions to see her grandson’s dream come to fruition.

Asthma, a family death, and sabotage look to derail Santiago’s dream of playing professional soccer, but in the end, perseverance and the never-ending desire to survive provide success in the endgame.

Victory (1981)

Starring Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine, the film’s backdrop is World War II Nazi Germany. Allied prisoners of war competing on a soccer team, are chosen to play an exhibition match against the Germans. Coached by Caine’s character, Stallone who is a Canadian player is not chosen to be on the team. He is later added as the team’s trainer. However, being on the team to play is not the plan for Hatch (Stallone). His intention is to use the soccer match to escape the prison camp where he and the others are incarcerated.

With assistance from Colby’s (Caine) superiors, Hatch escapes from the prison camp with orders to bring back members of the French Resistance to help the prisoners escape the camp. Hatch is captured and placed in solitary confinement and is no longer allowed to participate with the team. Colby pleads with the German authorities that Hatch is his backup goalie and that his normal starter is injured.

Finally, after plotting to escape during halftime of the match, the POWs choose to continue playing the match, which ends in a draw. During the celebration on the field after the end of the match, the POWs led by Colby and Hatch, escape the prison camp safely.
